ACHIEVEMENTS

1. Able to gain new knowledge and experience

Through this social engagement project, we learned how to communicate and liaise with organizations outside of UM. We also know the procedure to organize an event which is we need to get the permission from Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia. Below is the approval letter from KPM. Alhamdulillah, we manage to get it.

Besides, we were able to interact with children of varying ages and spend quality time nurturing them. To communicate with them, we also learned simple sign language.

Two days of volunteering at SKPK provided us the opportunity to learn how to take care and educate the children.       

2. Helping people brings a sense of satisfaction and gratification

Volunteering work is something that we chose to do and execute without any pressure from others. Conducting activities and educational games with children and spending time with them may be viewed as small and insignificant things by the general public, but we realize that all the services that we have offered actually makes a difference to the community, no matter on what scale. For example, at SKPK Shah Alam, we manage to make the students feel happy until some of them crying when we want to leave. This is because they rarely have visitors due to some safety procedure,

In essence, we learnt that small good deeds that we carry out will give us a sense of accomplishment.

For most of our group members, this was the first time for volunteering. We are pretty sure this social engagement project will become a starting point to do more volunteer services in the future. If we didn’t carry out this project we would not have learned the importance of volunteering until now. We also came to realize that volunteering is a two-way street: It can benefit you by learning a lot of valuable lessons. Dedicating our time as a volunteer helps us make new friends, expand our network, and boost our social skills.

3. Develop and strengthen our communication skills

Being volunteers in this community service project, we all learnt how to interact and socialize with these younger children. Whether it was through the fun activities/games or during the end-of-the-day sharing session, we all had the chance to communicate meaningfully with the children and learn a few things from them while still managing to impart some of the knowledge we had with them. Moreover, we manage to learn the sign language from the students and person in charge. It is really mesmerizing to us because we had a chance to learn the sign language using our hands hence developing our communication skills

4. Cultivate the value teamwork among volunteers

Throughout the course of this programme, be it during the preparation or implementation

phase, all of us worked well with each other and cooperated efficiently to ensure our project would be a success. As we were divided into our own job scopes before the events so we know our responsibilities.. We realize that in order for any project to be accomplished successfully, teamwork is vital to get the job done. In doing so, we were able to strengthen the bond between us, volunteers throughout this social programme.

Without teamwork and commitment from every member of Group 5, this project wouldn’t be a huge success. Diverse races and religions did not stop us from helping each other and working together as a team.. The famous Ford car founder Henry Ford had said ‘coming together is a beginning, keeping together is a process and working together is success. Just like he said, this social engagement project wouldn’t be success without teamwork and commitment.

5. Learn to be punctual.

As the saying goes, punctuality is the politeness of the King, we learnt to be punctual from this project. We learnt to plan and organize our project effectively to ensure the successful of the project. We always set a deadline for every preparation so that we manage to finish the task on time. Besides, we also prepared programme flow to make sure everything are following the schedule and without any delay.

This is because any delay will cause the next activity cannot be carried out thus getting the best effect to the students.

As scheduled, everyone gathered on time before each activity, making the programme went

smoothly. We also learn that punctuality help us boost our time management. By keeping track of time, we are able to execute every task assigned before the deadline.
